STAY AWAY FROM SONOMA TILEMAKERS AND TILE WHOLESALERS! We purchased Sonoma's Stellar Arabesque tile for our kitchen backsplash from Tile Wholesalers (TWR). The staff at TWR told us the tile are hand glazed and may have slight color variation. So, we ordered samples (six week lead time). The color was consistent, so we ordered the rather expensive tile (another six weeks). When our contractor was finally able to begin installation, he found them to be defective (bowed)/of various sizes. He contacted TWR, who, for the FIRST time, informed him (not us!) that these are handmade and there will be some variation in color AND size. NO ONE at TWR told us this when we were shopping nor when we placed the order. Furthermore, the samples we received were the same size, giving us no indication this might be the slightest problem. Had we known these tile could be varying sizes, we would not have even considered them, let alone buy them!! In addition, our contractor (who has been in business for over 20 years) said the variance/tolerance is too great. It is acceptable to have variants of up to 1/16”; however, these are ¼” or more. (We also contacted another tile installer for yet another unbiased opinion, and he said “the tile job will not look good because the tile lines will be crooked or we would need very large grout lines. Your whole kitchen will look bad.” TWR said they would speak with Sonoma's Rep. After a week of back and forth (requesting photos, then asking for all the tile, which are in their possession now), we were told “a cursory review of the opened boxes did not support your concern.” Apparently, it is customary for Sonoma (a “premium/luxury” tile company) and Tile Wholesalers to sell defective products and be OK with it. TWR also seems to believe it is acceptable to withhold information from their customers PRIOR to purchasing non-returnable product. But hey, who cares, as long as they make a sale, right?!?

Ordered Sonoma Tilemakers "Stellar" in Obsidian - samples were beautiful, with soft frames + lighter centers. What arrived? Solid black. Their response: "Within accepted variance." Couldn't wait any longer for a working kitchen, so l used them.
