Mad River Gardens Nursery

This is a place with a relatively wide selection of indoor outdoor plants, easy to drop a couple hundred here 😆. The indoor plants tended to be healthier and more robust than the outdoor plants (a number of which had been overwatered), so take a careful look at each potted plant you select before putting it in your cart. The women personning the cash registers were terrifically kind and helpful, and I appreciated having a staff person load a bag of soil in the back of my car. 👍🏼 What was exceptionally frustrating, though, is a problem common to many nurseries: the lack of affordable, attractive pots. Most of the ones I looked at were in the $60-$80 range, including very cheaply made redwood planter boxes [with staples slammed randomly into the sides, making them look cheap]. Eventually I found some not-too-terrible plastic rectangular planting boxes (in 2 colors: light blue & pine green) made from recycled ♻️ plastic, which is great!! These options deserve to be highlighted, not collecting dust in a corner. I brought two home with me, where I found I needed an electric drill to punch out the drainage holes in the base of the planters. While doing so, one lost a chunk of plastic — so, duct tape to the rescue 🛟!

Love this place. Great selection of plants and potting soils. My favorite place to get amendments bc they have bulk bins so you can get as little or as much as you want! Also, the bulk potting soil and compost options are perfect. Wheelchair accessible store and bathroom.
