PG&E offers up to $3,200 for installing a qualifying ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater (HPWH) with a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of 2.2 or higher. This applies to PG&E residential customers in Northern California replacing an existing gas or electric resistance water heater. The rebate can be stacked with Golden State Rebates ($900) for combined savings of up to $4,100. PG&E serves much of Placer, Yolo, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Solano counties — areas outside SMUD's Sacramento territory.

How to Apply

1Confirm you're a PG&E customer (check your utility bill — if it says PG&E, you qualify)
2Get a free quote through NorCal Repairs for a heat pump water heater installation
3Select an ENERGY STAR certified HPWH with UEF of 2.2+ (contractor helps with this)
4After installation, submit rebate application through PG&E's online rebate portal
5Upload proof of purchase, installation invoice, and before/after photos
6Receive rebate check within 6-8 weeks
7Stack with Golden State Rebates: apply separately at goldenstaterebates.com for additional $900

What is UEF and why does it matter?+

Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) measures water heater efficiency. Heat pump water heaters have UEF of 2.0-4.0, meaning they produce 2-4x more hot water per unit of energy than a standard tank (UEF ~0.6 for gas). Higher UEF = lower operating costs.
